On November 26, 2025, the military took control of Guinea-Bissau, suspending elections, closing borders, and claiming "total control." This shocked the West African continent.

Goodluck Jonathan, the former president of Nigeria, was one among those caught up in the mayhem. He had come to Guinea-Bissau to lead an election-observation mission for the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), collaborating with observer teams from ECOWAS and the African Union (AU).

The Nigerian government quickly responded to appeals from domestic MPs and was alarmed by the danger to his safety. Jonathan and his delegation were evacuated from Guinea-Bissau by a chartered jet.

He arrived home safely at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on the evening of November 27, when he was greeted by officials and supporters.
