Today, October 29, 2025, we honour the extraordinary life of Kechi Okwuchi, a lady whose story continues to motivate millions of people worldwide. Kechi, who is 36 years old, is a shining example of resilience, bravery, and faith; she is a real example of how even the darkest times can give rise to the greatest light.
Kechi was born in Nigeria in 1989. Her life tragically changed on December 10, 2005, when she was one of just two people to survive the devastating crash of Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145, which killed 107 people. She only had a 30% chance of surviving after suffering third-degree burns over 65% of her body when she was just 16 years old. Nevertheless, Kechi persevered through unbearable suffering and numerous surgeries, clinging not only to life but also to a purpose.
Her amazing story began with her arduous journey to recovery. Kechi had over 100 reconstructive surgeries , each of which strengthened her spirit and advanced her physical recovery. Tragedy was transformed into testimony by her unshakable faith and the help of her family and medical staff.
Kechi moved to the United States years later, where she continued her studies and earned a first-class honours degree in economics from the University of St. Thomas, Houston, in 2015. When Kechi tried out for America's Got Talent (AGT) in 2017, she won over hearts all around the world. She was selected as a finalist on the show thanks to her deep voice and compelling life story.
Kechi is currently a motivational speaker, author, and burn survivor advocate in addition to being a musician. Her memoir, More Than My Scars, which was published in 2022, is an open and sincere account of her experience with trauma, recovery, and self-discovery. We celebrate you today and always!
Happy Birthday, Kechi Okwuchi! 🎉
